For a Healthy Heart, Keep Your Gums Healthy

annall • Feb 01, 2023

You likely understand the importance of diet and exercise in keeping your heart in great shape. But it’s also important to keep your gums healthy with good dental care.

Watch this video from the British Heart Foundation to learn more about the connection between heart health and gum health. Gum disease can certainly wreak havoc in your mouth, with advanced cases leading to tooth and bone loss. But if the bacteria that cause the disease get into your bloodstream, they can travel to other areas of your body.

This is especially problematic in the heart. The inflammation that may result can damage your blood vessels, causing or worsening coronary disease. Research shows the bacteria can also cause endocarditis, a serious infection of the heart’s inner lining.

The good news is, regular exams and cleanings in our Indianapolis office will help you prevent gum disease – as well as other dental problems like cavities. And if you do have gum disease, we can reverse it in its early stages with prompt treatment. A deep-cleaning treatment called scaling and root planing is often all that is needed to return your mouth to health.

Gum disease symptoms include gums that look red instead of pink, chronic bad breath and tenderness and bleeding in the gums, often when brushing or flossing. Want to keep your gums healthy? If you notice any of these signs of disease, call Isaacs Family Dental at 317-298-3384 right away.
